How to measure for a kamarband
Share
Every Kardhini piece is free size and adjusts to fit a waist from 28 to 38 inches (71 to 97 cm). Free size does not mean every size, so a two-minute measurement is worth doing before you order. It tells you whether the piece will fit, and where it will sit.

1. Decide where you will wear it
A waist chain can sit in two places, and each one gives a different number, so measure the one you plan to use.
- Natural waist: the narrowest part of your torso, just above the navel. The classic placement over a saree.
- Lower hip: a few inches below the navel, where a lehenga skirt sits. This number is usually larger, often by 2 to 4 inches.
If you want to wear the same piece both ways, measure both. Both numbers need to fall between 28 and 38 inches.
2. Measure over the outfit
Wear the saree, lehenga or skirt you have in mind, because fabric adds to the measurement, especially pleats and the tucked end of a saree. If the outfit is not to hand, measure over similar clothing and add about half an inch for a saree drape or an inch for a heavier lehenga.
3. Take the measurement
- Stand straight and relax your stomach.
- Wrap a soft tape around the spot you chose, keeping it level all the way round. A string and a ruler work too.
- Keep it snug but not tight: one finger should slip underneath.
- Note the number in inches or centimetres.
4. Fasten it
Put the piece on last, once you are dressed, so it sits over the fabric. Fasten the clasp at the length that lets the chain rest flat, without pulling at the clasp or sliding down. Check it in a mirror sitting down as well as standing; a waist piece should feel secure when you sit.
5. Read your number
- Between 29 and 37 inches: the piece will fit comfortably, with room to adjust either way.
- Close to 28 or 38 inches: it will fit, but with little room to adjust. Message us before you order and we will tell you how it will sit.
- Under 28 or over 38 inches: the piece is not made for that measurement, and we would rather tell you now than after delivery. Write to us; we can suggest the placement that brings you inside the range, if there is one.
