Three ways to style waist jewellery beyond the bridal look
Share
Waist jewellery is often bought for one wedding and then kept in its box. It deserves more outings than that. Because every Kardhini piece is free size and adjusts to fit a 28 to 38 inch waist, the same piece can move from one outfit, and one placement, to the next.
1. Over a saree, at the natural waist
The classic placement. Drape the saree as usual, then fasten the chain at the narrowest part of the waist, over the pleats and the pallu. It frames the waist, keeps the drape neat and draws the eye to the line of the saree. For a festive dinner or a family puja, a fine chain over a plain silk or cotton saree feels dressed up without looking bridal.
2. Lower on the hip, with a lehenga
With a lehenga or a skirt and blouse, let the chain sit a few inches lower, on the hip where the skirt begins. It follows the waistband and catches the light as you move, which works especially well for sangeet and mehendi evenings. Choose a lighter piece if the lehenga is heavily embroidered, so the two do not compete.
3. Against a contemporary drape
Waist jewellery also works away from traditional dress. Wear a fine chain over a draped dress, a pre-stitched saree or a co-ord set with a cropped top, at whichever height suits the outfit. Against a solid colour, a single fine line of chain is often all the outfit needs.
A few things to keep in mind
- Fasten the piece after you are dressed, so it sits over the fabric and not under it.
- Check it in a mirror while sitting as well as standing; it should rest flat without pulling.
- Put it on last, after perfume and lotion, and keep it in its box when you are not wearing it.
